Scrappbook alternatives 2026: when switching is worth it
The right scrappbook alternative depends on what you expect from your gallery. scrappbook is the more extensive and more expensive solution, with a few more features, but also more to learn. PictoMento is simple and intuitive: you pay €10 per gallery or €199 a year for unlimited galleries, which is less than with scrappbook.
Of all providers, scrappbook is the most similar to us: a German provider with servers in the EU, built for people photography, with face recognition and a print shop. The difference therefore lies in the details and in the costs.
Upfront: we are PictoMento and therefore a scrappbook alternative ourselves. That's why we start with what scrappbook does better.
What makes scrappbook strong
scrappbook from Düsseldorf is an online gallery with a built-in sales system. According to the company, more than 60,000 photographers use the platform. Its strengths:
- Sales: print shop and digital shop, no percentage service fee on photo products, 4.9% on digital files (15% on the Free plan), each plus €1 per order
- Revenue tools: vouchers, marketing automation and an AI-powered photo album editor
- Storage: unlimited photos from Starter, 5 GB included for videos
- Design: more than ten gallery templates, multiple brand profiles, custom domains
- Workflow: Lightroom plugin for direct upload, selection system with hearts and comments
- Client experience: gallery app without an app store, slideshows, statistics
- Security: password protection, watermarks, PIN-protected downloads, EU servers
- Face recognition: as a filter, can be activated per gallery
So scrappbook is more than a gallery: it's a shop that keeps selling after the shoot. For many family and baby photographers, that's exactly the point.
When you should stay with scrappbook
You earn money from digital files. With scrappbook, you sell single images or complete downloads directly through the gallery. PictoMento can't do that.
Your shop is a revenue channel of its own. Vouchers, automated reminders, photo albums: if you actively sell after the shoot, scrappbook covers more ground.
You need password protection. scrappbook includes it in every plan. PictoMento works with personal links and expiry dates instead; there is no password protection.
If most of this applies to you, stay with scrappbook. Switching wouldn't gain you much.
Which alternative for which case?
Depending on what bothers you about scrappbook, a different alternative is the right one:
You'll find all eight providers in detail in our comparison of online galleries.
When PictoMento is worth it as an alternative
When every guest should only see their own photos
Both providers offer face recognition, but they use it differently. At scrappbook, it's a filter: anyone with the gallery link sees all images and can filter by person. You can hide images or share a selection via link, but there is no personal access per guest.
At PictoMento, every guest gets their own link. With the guests' consent, you register their faces, and each guest lands directly in their “For you” chapter. Through personal access, you decide who can open which images. The bride's getting ready stays with the couple.
When you don't want to pay every month
scrappbook is only available as a subscription. With PictoMento, you pay €10 per gallery, and the gallery stays online for a year. With 8 weddings a year, that's €80 instead of €174 for a year of scrappbook Starter.
When you need unlimited galleries
At scrappbook, unlimited galleries start with Professional at €348 a year, or €468 with monthly billing. PictoMento Unlimited costs €199 a year, with no total storage limit and no fixed limit per gallery.
When your brand should come first
With scrappbook, you can add your logo and design on every plan. A gallery entirely without scrappbook branding, however, is only available on the Business plan from €79 a month. At PictoMento, white label is included in every plan: your own colours, fonts, links and logo. We stay invisible.
When your couples speak Dutch
PictoMento galleries are available in German, Dutch and English. Besides German, scrappbook offers English among others, but does not explicitly mention Dutch.
What scrappbook and PictoMento cost
This is what a year looks like, each with the cheapest suitable option:
scrappbook billed annually. Monthly, Starter costs €19 (minimum 3 months) and Professional €39. The three free PictoMento galleries are a one-time offer when you start, and each stays online for twelve months.
From 16 galleries a year, you need scrappbook Professional, because Starter is limited to 15 galleries. From 20 galleries, PictoMento's Unlimited package pays off. You'll find all plans, shop fees and add-ons under scrappbook pricing.
scrappbook and PictoMento compared directly
What the difference looks like at a wedding
Imagine a wedding with 90 guests and 700 photos.
With scrappbook, the couple opens a beautifully designed gallery in one of your templates. If they share the link with their guests, everyone sees the same 700 photos. Using face recognition, each guest filters for themselves. Anything guests shouldn't see, you hide beforehand.
With PictoMento, the couple opens a gallery in your design, without anyone else's logo. You register the faces of the guests who have given consent. Each guest gets their own link, lands directly in their “For you” chapter and only sees what is meant for them. The aunt orders her favourite photo as a print, and you earn from it.
Both approaches work. The difference: with scrappbook, guests search for themselves. With PictoMento, the gallery finds them.
Data protection: both from Germany
When it comes to data protection, the two providers are close. scrappbook and PictoMento are both based in Germany, host in the EU and provide a data processing agreement under Art. 28 GDPR.
Face recognition deserves a closer look. Facial data is biometric data and requires explicit consent. scrappbook deletes the biometric data within 24 hours when you switch the feature off for a gallery. PictoMento only uses face recognition once you, as the photographer, confirm that consent has been given. Whichever provider you use: obtain your guests' consent beforehand.
What PictoMento is not
So you don't switch and end up disappointed:
- No digital sales. You don't sell single images or downloads through the gallery, only prints.
- No sales system. PictoMento has no vouchers, no marketing automation and no album editor.
- No password protection. You control access through personal links and expiry dates.
- No archive. PictoMento is built for delivery and presentation, not for RAW files or long-term archiving.
Switching without risk
- 1Test with real jobs. The first three galleries are free, no credit card required.
- 2Keep scrappbook running in parallel. With monthly billing, you can cancel Professional monthly, and Starter after a minimum of 3 months.
- 3Let us move your galleries. We migrate your existing galleries for free, including from scrappbook.
- 4Migrate first, then cancel. scrappbook's Free plan only covers 3 galleries and 5 GB. So move all galleries that should stay online first.
By the way, some photographers use both: scrappbook for family and baby shoots with sales, PictoMento for weddings with many guests. That's a sensible setup too.
Frequently asked questions
Is scrappbook a German provider?
Yes. scrappbook is based in Düsseldorf, and according to scrappbook, data is stored on servers in the EU. A data processing agreement under the GDPR is available.
How much does scrappbook cost?
Free costs nothing and includes 3 galleries and 5 GB. Starter costs €14.50 a month billed annually (€19 monthly, minimum 3 months) for 15 galleries. Professional with unlimited galleries costs €29 a month billed annually, i.e. €348 a year, or €39 monthly. Business with white label starts at €79 a month. All prices excl. VAT.
Does scrappbook have face recognition?
Yes. Your clients can use it to filter the gallery by person. You activate the feature per gallery, and only once: after switching it off, it cannot be switched back on for that gallery. At PictoMento, face recognition also controls what each guest sees through their personal link.
What is the best scrappbook alternative for wedding photographers?
If many guests open the same gallery and everyone should only see their own photos, PictoMento is the obvious alternative: with personal guest access, “For you” chapters and €10 per gallery instead of a subscription. If you mainly sell files and photo products, scrappbook remains the stronger choice.
Is PictoMento cheaper than scrappbook?
In most cases, yes. Up to 15 galleries a year, you pay at most €150 with PictoMento instead of €174 for a year of scrappbook Starter. For unlimited galleries, you pay €199 instead of €348 for scrappbook Professional. Only if 3 galleries and 5 GB are permanently enough for you is scrappbook Free cheaper.
Are scrappbook galleries available in English or Dutch?
According to scrappbook's help centre, the language of portfolios can be set, including English alongside German. scrappbook does not explicitly mention Dutch. PictoMento galleries are available in German, Dutch and English.
Can I sell images as downloads with PictoMento?
No. Your clients order prints through the PictoMento shop, and you receive a licence fee. You don't sell digital files through the gallery. If that matters to you, scrappbook is the better choice.
Can I move my galleries from scrappbook to PictoMento?
Yes. Migration is free. Only cancel scrappbook once all galleries that should stay online have been moved.
